Indicators for this outcome
(a)

Investigate the components of a specific farm animal facility, including:

  • structures (e.g., building type, construction material and technology);
  • indoor temperature and air quality;
  • size;
  • barrier against predators;
  • adequate access to feed and water;
  • appropriate and well-drained area for bedding;
  • waste removal;
  • biosecurity;
  • worker safety;
  • species specific needs (e.g., beehives and egg laying); and,
  • technology.
(b) Describe the purposes and benefits of different types of livestock housing (e.g., stall barns and loose housing).
(c) Compare different types of rails and wire fencing (e.g., barbed, woven, cable, mesh and electric) including factors such as cost, potential injury to animals and workers and suitability for different livestock.
(d) Explain the purpose of temporary and permanent fencing.
(e) Analyze the cost, availability, effectiveness, animal safety and worker safety of equipment options (e.g., cages, chutes, corrals, gates and pens) for sorting, handling and loading livestock.
