Indicators
(a) | Compare and contrast various communication styles. |
(b) | Describe how professional communication differs from other types of communication (e.g., personal social media posts, personal cell phone use). |
(c) | Describe verbal (e.g., calling someone by their first name) and non-verbal communication (e.g., body language, touch, silence, eye contact, shaking hands) that vary among cultures. |
(d) | Explore effective communication methods (e.g., paraphrasing, empathetic listening, asking closed questions, asking open-ended questions, clarifying). |
(e) | Explain the barriers to effective communication (e.g., vision problems, loud noises, lack of privacy, distractions). |
(f) | Explore augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools to reduce barriers to communication. |
(g) | List common defense mechanisms (e.g., denial, displacement, passive-aggressiveness, projection, rationalization, suppression) and explain how they interfere with effective communication. |
(h) | Explain how messages can be misinterpreted when conveyed electronically. |
(i) | Practise using effective communication techniques for telephone conversations and text messages. |
