Module 4: Workplace Safety (Core)
Outcome
Research workplace safety principles, practices and relevant legislation required for employees in the workplace.
Indicators
(a) | Examine how provincial Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation outlines the rights and responsibilities of workers and employers. |
(b) | Explore how hazardous materials in the workplace should be identified, managed and stored according to the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). |
(c) | Explore human rights legislation that protects workers’ basic human rights (e.g., being free from discrimination based on ethnic background, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age or disability). |
(d) | Research injury prevention and safety certifications (e.g., First Aid, CPR, and AED training) in caregiving environments that prepare for employment. |
(e) | Identify risks and potential hazards in work area in caregiving environments (e.g., space, location and storage of equipment, ergonomics, electrical cords) and strategies to mitigate risks. |
(f) | Discuss how employers can support employee mental health as a part of workplace safety. |
(g) | Research the roles and responsibilities of the worker, employer and supervisor in ensuring workplace safety. |
