Outcome
Examine caregiving approaches for infants.
Indicators
(a) | Investigate how early learning and child care environments must meet the nutritional needs of infants (e.g., bottle feeding, using breast milk, formula, introduction to solid foods). |
(b) | Describe the various types of formulas, the water to formula ratio and appropriate bottle heating methods. |
(c) | Demonstrate burping positions and techniques. |
(d) | Recognize signs of painful gas, colic and reflux and demonstrate holds and strategies to alleviate them. |
(e) | Research safe sleep practices for infants and infant sleep cycles. |
(f) | Discuss ways to deal with a crying infant safely (e.g., try to calm the baby, give the baby to a colleague, leave the baby in a safe place for a few minutes, never shake a baby). |
(g) | Demonstrate effective swaddling techniques. |
(h) | Demonstrate proper diapering techniques. |
(i) | Discuss the use of cloth and disposable diaper in early learning and child care environments. |
(j) | Explore family and cultural differences in infant care practices. |
(k) | Explore ways to foster positive attachments and relationships with infants. |
