Module 16: Safety and Injury Prevention for Children (Core for Early Learning Pathway)
Outcome
Examine ways to prevent injuries and promote safety of children.
Indicators
(a) Identify main causes of early childhood deaths and injury.
(b) Investigate household consumer products that present an injury risk to children (e.g., telephones, soaps and detergents, chairs, light bulbs, dangling blind cords).
(c)

Explain safe use of equipment including:

  • carriers;
  • playpens;
  • swings;
  • strollers;
  • car seats;
  • booster seats; and,
  • high chairs.
(d) Recognize foods that are dangerous for infants and toddlers (e.g., raw honey, unpasteurized milk, hot dogs, whole grapes).
(e) Identify choking, strangulation and suffocation hazards (e.g., foods, toys, strings, cords, pillows) and strategies to use to mitigate risk.
(f) Research how worldview may impact childrearing practices in terms of safety (e.g., risky play, choice of toys, child guidance).
(g) Investigate the difference between the concepts of “as safe as necessary” and “as safe as possible”.
(h) Outline procedures for treating various injuries (e.g., cuts, bites, burns, sunburns, stings).
(i) Discuss ways to prevent accidents and injuries in children at different ages.
(j) Research ways to childproof a home for injury prevention.
