Module 17: Safety in Early Learning and Child Care Environments (Core for Early Learning Focus)
Outcome
Examine the legal responsibilities and procedures to ensure safety in early learning and child care environments.
Indicators
(a) | Describe the legal expectations for ensuring physically safe environments for children in early learning and child care environments (e.g., adult-child ratios, fire-safety regulations, food-safety regulations, emergency weather preparedness plans, WHMIS regulations). |
(b) | Investigate the purpose of minor incident and major incident reports. |
(c) | Examine factors that can lead to neglect or physical, sexual or emotional abuse of children (e.g., family history of violence, stress, addictions). |
(d) | Identify possible indicators of child abuse. |
(e) | Describe the early learning and child care caregiver’s legal responsibility in reporting suspected abuse (e.g., consult the Saskatchewan Child Abuse Protocol 2014). |
(f) | Discuss privacy laws that protect children’s records. |
(g) | Investigate the procedures related to administering medication (e.g., allergy medication, pain medication, insulin, antibiotics, inhalers) in an early learning and child care environment. |
(h) | Examine how early learning and child care environments can respect the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. |
(i) | Investigate the roles of society in ensuring the safety of children (e.g., Amber Alerts). |
