Module 24: Outdoor Environments (Optional)
Outcome
Analyze outdoor early learning and child care environments.
Indicators
(a) | Explore a variety of playground design philosophies (e.g., open ended, risky play, inclusive, nature inspired, fitness focused). |
(b) | Discuss the relationship between outdoor education and land-based education. |
(c) | Identify elements of an optimal outdoor early childhood learning environment (e. g., plants and flowers native to Saskatchewan to attract insects and birds, equipment to support large muscle development, sheltered areas for protection from the sun and the rain). |
(d) | Identify materials that support and extend children’s learning outdoors (e.g., magnifying glasses, identification books, bug keepers, shovels, rakes, water). |
(e) | Identify outdoor elements that could be brought indoors (e.g., growing seeds inside, watching bugs in bug keepers, collecting pine cones for an art project). |
(f) | Discuss strategies to adapt early learning outdoor environments for the safety of children with diverse abilities, temperaments or interests (e.g., uncluttered outdoor setting, modifying hands-on activities, accessible play structures). |
(g) | Discuss ways to ensure safety when in outdoor environments (e.g., close supervision around water, sun protection measures, cold weather clothing). |
(h) | Examine the benefits of gardening with children (e.g., providing sensory experiences, engaging families, developing a deeper understanding of where food comes from). |
(i) | Identify opportunities and challenges of playing outdoors in all seasons. |
(j) | Design, sketch or create a representation of an early childhood outdoor environment. |
