Module 25: Supporting Children’s Mental Health (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate how to support children’s mental health and development of positive sense of self in early learning and child care environments.
Indicators
(a) | Explore self-concepts (e.g., traits, characteristics, beliefs, behaviours, attitudes) and self-esteem (e.g., how one evaluates aspects of the self). |
(b) | Describe the characteristics of an environment that promotes good mental health and self-esteem (e.g., safe place to express emotions, positive staff interactions, greetings, children feeling valued, positive relationships with the children and families). |
(c) | Explore the differences in infant temperaments (e.g., easy-going, slow to warm up, active) and their continuation later in childhood. |
(d) | Identify ways to recognize, interpret and respond to a child’s cues. |
(e) | Investigate strategies to alleviate stress and anxiety in children (e.g., breathing exercises, art therapy, sensory experiences, spending time outdoors, laughter, roughhousing). |
(f) | Demonstrate empathy in role-play. |
(g) | Demonstrate acknowledging and labeling young children’s feelings. |
(h) | Explore the benefits of contact with nature on children’s mental health. |
