Module 29: Indigenous Approaches to Child Rearing (Core for Early Learning Pathway)
Outcome
Explore Indigenous approaches to child rearing, nurturing and learning.
Indicators
(a) Research traditional Indigenous prenatal supports, delivery and postpartum care programs available in Saskatchewan.
(b) Engage with a local First Nations or Métis Elder to talk about traditional early child development teachings.
(c) Explore cultural teachings related to birth and infancy.
(d) Investigate the role of grandparents and Elders in raising children (e.g., transmitting language, ceremony and culture, teaching stories, role modeling).
(e) Investigate kinship relationships and roles of family and community members (e.g., aunties, uncles, stepparents, parents-in-law, existing natural supports) in caring for Indigenous children.
(f) Identify the importance of ancestral language development in traditional approaches to child rearing, nurturing, and learning.
(g) Discuss the importance of spending time on the land with young children to support the development of their identity.
(h) Explain the importance of pregnancy, children and older persons in Indigenous communities.
(i) Research tipi teachings and how they are applicable to nurturing and development.
(j) Identify local agencies that can support learning about traditional Indigenous teachings.
(k) Research the impact of residential schools, the Sixties Scoop and the millennial scoop on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual connections between children, parents, families and communities.
