Module 33: Intellectual Domain of Development (Optional)
Outcome
Explore the intellectual domain of development of infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
Indicators
(a) | Explore aspects of the intellectual domain of development (e.g., creating and imagining, recognizing attributes and characteristics, exploring numeracy, language and literacy) from birth to six years of age. |
(b) | Research creative representations, constructions or props to encourage imaginative play for toddlers and preschoolers. |
(c) | Curate a selection of open-ended age-appropriate materials, including culturally relevant materials, (e.g., loose parts such as shells, pine cones, small stones, fabrics, wood materials, beads, water containers, clay, tools and utensils) that children can use to recognize attributes and characteristics. |
(d) | Identify a selection of age-appropriate tools and devices (e.g., measuring tapes, measuring cups, rulers, sticks) children can use for measurement. |
(e) | Discuss the presence of numeracy in everyday life in an early learning setting (e.g., counting songs, estimating amounts, measuring lengths). |
(f) | Identify age-appropriate activities to explore the concept of time (e.g., posting a calendar, talking about seasons, planning long-term multi-step projects). |
(g) | Create age-appropriate activities to explore positioning (e.g. before, after, over, under, in front, behind). |
(h) | Develop a template to observe the intellectual developmental skills of a child in an early childhood setting. |
(i) | Discuss how intellectual development might influence other areas of development. |
