Module 36: Observation, Documentation and Assessment (Optional)
Outcome
Explore observation, documentation and assessment processes in early learning and child care environments.
Indicators
(a) Differentiate between observation, documentation and assessment.
(b)

Investigate the steps of the assessment cycle used by early learning and child care caregivers, including:

  • collecting assessment evidence;
  • analyzing and Interpreting evidence;
  • establishing goals and creating a plan; and,
  • implementing plan and evaluating effectiveness.
(c) Investigate developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive assessment practices, such as developing a relationship with the child, administering assessment tools in the child’s first language and allowing children to represent their ideas in a variety of ways.
(d) Differentiate between screening tools (e.g., observation templates, journals, data collection, notes) and assessment tools (e.g. early years assessments).
(e) Explore specialized assessments completed by professional specialists (e.g., speech language pathologist, occupational therapist, educational psychologist).
(f) Evaluate documentation tools (e.g., pictures, videos, products) used to record the four domains of development.
(g) Demonstrate appropriate ways (e.g., terminology) to discuss children’s learning and development amongst colleagues or with parents and guardians.
