Outcome
Recognize the importance of personal hygiene in health care environments.
Indicators
(a) Explain the importance of personal hygiene for patients and care providers in health care environments.
(b) Examine daily care routines including morning care, afternoon care and evening care.
(c) Discuss how to assist with personal hygiene while considering the patient’s dignity, independence, individualized care, preferences, privacy and safety.
(d) Describe oral hygiene and the observations to report to the care team.
(e) Examine ways to support good oral health.
(f) Explore the labelling process for personal items (e.g., clothing, glasses, blankets, dentures) in health care environments.
(g) Describe the guidelines for bathing (e.g., collect all needed items before the bath, provide for privacy, protect from burns and scalds).
(h) Describe compassionate caring for the patient receiving assistance with bathing.
(i) Identify the safety precautions for patients taking tub baths or showers.
(j) Examine safe practices for caregivers providing personal hygiene services.
