Apply, with guidance, a variety of strategies to produce oral and written Dakota texts and reflect on personal language learning.
Indicators for this outcome
(a) Use the Dakota language for personal communication.
(b) Apply, with guidance, a variety of before, during and after strategies to communicate meaning when writing and speaking.
(c) Mimic Dakota alphabet sounds using technological applications.
(d) Experiment with using signs for words (i.e., American Sign Language) to communicate meaning when learning to speak Dakota.
(e) Consult resources (e.g., peers, family, elders, knowledge keepers, dictionaries and technological applications) and visual aids (e.g., paintings, photos, drawings and online resources) to support the production of oral and written texts.

Apply, with guidance, language learning strategies to support the production of oral and written text, such as:

  • taking risks;
  • using prior knowledge for personal expression in Dakota;
  • visual and oral prompts (e.g., pointing and saying the first syllable); and,
  • using physical (e.g., gestures and facial expressions) and auditory (e.g., laughter, tone and volume) cues to convey meaning.
(g) Use the English alphabet to phonetically write basic Dakota vocabulary.
(h) Evaluate own written and oral productions.
(i) Explain that risk-taking, positive attitude and pride are part of effective language learning.
(j) Discuss the challenges and rewards of learning to communicate in an additional language.
(k) Reflect, with guidance, on personal writing and speaking strategies.
