Demonstrate, when interpreting oral and written texts, knowledge of Dakota language concepts including basic context-specific vocabulary, word order and linguistic conventions.
Indicators for this outcome
(a) Explore the similarities between the Dakota and English alphabets.
(b) Identify the letters and accents on letters that produce particular sounds in the Dakota alphabet. Please refer to Appendix A for a complete list of sounds.
(c) Practise reading basic Dakota vocabulary (e.g., forest, water and air) and simple sentences.
(d) Recognize numbers from 0 to 100 when spoken and written in contexts related to the land (e.g., number of birds in a flock).
(e) Investigate the difference when using the number one to count or to describe a quantity (i.e., one book – waɳji; 1, 2, 3, – waɳc̀a).
(f) Explore how the pronunciation of some words affects their meaning.
(g) Recognize singular and plural versions of basic nouns in environments beyond the classroom (e.g., lake and lakes).
(h)

Identify male and female ways of speaking, such as:

  • the greeting for “Hello” is pronounced “haɳ” by a female and “hau” by a male; and,
  • the word for “yes” is pronounced “haɳ” by a female and “hau” by a male.
(i) Comprehend present-tense verbs in first, second and third person singular (e.g., dancing, hunting and gathering).
(j) Explore, with guidance, the inverted phrase structure of the Dakota language when listening to and reading complete sentences.
