Demonstrate, when producing oral and written texts, knowledge of Dakota language concepts including basic context-specific vocabulary, word order and linguistic conventions.
Indicators for this outcome
(a) Practise the different sounds of the Dakota alphabet including guttural and exploded pronunciations of letters. Please refer to Appendix A for a complete list of sounds.
(b) Write basic vocabulary (e.g., forest, water and air) and simple sentences with the Dakota alphabet.
(c) Say and write the numbers from 0 to 100 in the context of the land (e.g., number of points on an antler, stars in a constellation and poles in a tipi).
(d) Pronounce the number one appropriately when counting or when using it as a quantity (e.g., one book – waɳji; 1, 2, 3, – waɳc̀a).
(e) Practise the different pronunciations of words that are spelled the same.
(f) Use singular and plural versions of basic nouns in environments beyond the classroom (e.g., tree and trees).

Apply the appropriate male and female ways of speaking, such as:

  • the greeting for “Hello” is pronounced “haɳ” by a female and “hau” by a male; and,
  • the word for “yes” is pronounced “haɳ” by a female and “hau” by a male.
(h) Conjugate present-tense verbs in first, second and third person singular (e.g., I am dancing, you are hunting and he or she is gathering).
(i) Practise, with guidance, speaking and writing with the inverted phrase structure of the Dakota language.
