Construct meaning, with guidance, of a variety of simple written non-fiction and fiction Dakota texts on familiar topics, to receive information, extend knowledge of the world, achieve objectives and for enjoyment.
Indicators for this outcome
(a)

Read a variety of simple written Dakota texts (e.g., children’s books and public signs) that address big ideas such as:

  • Dakota communities in Saskatchewan;
  • Circle of Life teachings; and,
  • kinship.
(b) Interpret simple common signs in Dakota (e.g., stop, office, washroom and names of rooms in school).
(c) Identify key information (e.g., location, date and time of an event) from personal texts (e.g., emails and text messages).
(d) Reiterate the basic directions of written imperative texts (e.g., rules of a game).
(e) Interpret information about time in both 12-hour clock and traditional formats.
(f)

Identify the following elements in written texts on familiar topics:

  • who is doing an action (i.e., subject);
  • who or what is receiving the action (i.e., direct object); and,
  • who is affected by the action (i.e., indirect object).
(g) React to written texts with emotion (e.g., empathy, surprise, appreciation or disgust).
