Demonstrate, when producing oral and written texts, knowledge of Dakota language concepts including context-specific vocabulary, sentence structure and linguistic conventions
Indicators for this outcome
(a) Practise the unique sounds of the Dakota language (e.g., guttural and explosive) to build fluency.
(b) Write combinations of multiple sentences using the Dakota alphabet.
(c) Practise making nouns and verbs plural in the context of the land (e.g., geese are flying and rivers are flowing).
(d) Conjugate present-tense verbs in first, second and third person plural (e.g., we are dancing, you are hunting and they are gathering).
(e) Add prefixes and suffixes to root words to change their meaning.
(f) Speak and write about common nouns (e.g., drum, “wac̀ipi” pow wow and tobacco) using the appropriate articles.
(g) Practise using a variety of adjectives and adverbs when describing the land.
(h) Use the interrogative form “he” to ask questions.
(i)

Practise the correct male and female ways of speaking in various contexts, such as:

  • females say “pi” in imperative form and males say “po”;
  • females indicate they found something humorous by saying “ḣoc̀a”; and,
  • females conclude sentences with “ye” and males with “do”.
(j) Practise, with some guidance, speaking and writing with the inverted phrase structure of the Dakota language.
