Demonstrate, when interpreting oral and written texts, knowledge of Dakota language concepts including vocabulary, sentence structure and linguistic conventions.
Indicators for this outcome
(a) Apply knowledge of vocabulary and context to interpret complex texts that contain multiple concepts and ideas.
(b) Compare how past, present and future are communicated in Dakota and English.
(c) Explain how actions done in the past are communicated with phrases that preface the action.
(d) Comprehend future-tense verbs in first, second and third person singular and plural in the context of land-based activities (e.g., I will go hunting, you will gather, they will be at the pow wow).
(e) Identify verbs that are conjugated based on the subject (e.g., I, you, we, they, all of us).
(f)

Analyze the use of descriptive language, such as:

  • adjectives that describe intensity (e.g., good and great); and,
  • adverbs to describe verbs and adjectives.
(g) Explore the literal characteristics of the Dakota language (i.e., figurative language is not used and Dakota speakers do not say one thing but mean another).
(h) Interpret the inverted phrase structure of the Dakota language when listening to and reading texts.
