One module in each kit focuses on Plains art work, but the inclusion of Arapaho of Kansas and Oklahoma under the heading "Métis" may cause confusion. The map on page 19 in each manual shows where individual artists live/lived, but the actual cultures are more widespread.
Both kits are useful for the elementary level.

Haydyn's Farewell Symphony
Celenza's story is a delightful introduction to Joseph Haydn, his Farewell Symphony and 18th century life. Joseph Haydn served as personal composer for Prince Nicholas of Esterhazy for nearly 30 years. He composed music as requested by the prince, was responsible for the care of all instruments and served as spokesperson for the members of the orchestra. Summers were spent at the prince's summer estate in Hungary and one summer as autumn approached, the musicians were growing increasingly homesick. Prince Nicholas refused to return home and he also refused Haydn's request to have the musicians' families visit. Haydn decided to appeal to the prince through his Symphony in F-Sharp Major, which reflects the musician's anger, sadness and frustration. When Prince Nicholas heard the symphony, he was so moved that he decided to return home. The striking watercolour-and-ink cartoons with simple lines and exaggerated characterizations convey a sense of the excess and finery of the period. There are notes on both 18th century form and instruments, as well as on the events and personalities in the story.

Roll with It is a collaborative project that includes all students contributing to the final artwork. The piece organically develops and evolves in response to student creation and composition. Laura explores materials and their transformation. Students consider colour, texture, shape, form and pattern while they develop material techniques. They cut, combine, layer and roll varying sizes of tissue paper strips into paper tubes that are then cut into bead-like lengths. Students then arrange and glue the rolled paper tubes of various sizes and colours in an upright position onto a substrate or surface (plywood or framed canvas) that will eventually hang on the wall in the school. The numerous irregular sized beads in a variety of colours sprout up in different directions, creating an abstract sculptural paper collage. The final artwork brings to mind aerial landscape views, satellite imagery and/or biological and geographical patterns and microscopic cellular formations.

As he watches, Watl'kina notices a figure he knows. It is the only time Watl'kina sees his father dance. The story is based on an incident in the life of retired judge Alfred Scow, Elder of the Kwick'wa'sut'eneiuk, one of the Kwakwa'ka'wakw Nations. We must continue speaking our Cree language. The revitalization of language and culture are vital to the rebuilding of community. In this workshop, educators and students revisit our mandate for play. Interactive elements include familiarizing ourselves with voice and body as we explore animal play of the Treaty 6 territory. These include bear (maskwa), eagle (kihew) and buffalo (paskwa-mostos). Language is also incorporated from a beginner level. As we choose to listen to the words and meanings of select Cree terms, we begin to understand how language is vital to identity. The workshop culminates in students playing animals and characters in an excerpt from Curtis Peeteetuce's youth play, kiwek, which is inspired by the film Jumanji. A talkback with students allows for post-performance discussion among the students and a chance to share what was learned.
