Six Tips for Graphic Design Sizzle
With guidance from a teacher, the middle level students portrayed in this short video create a poster that includes important information and catches the attention of their classmates. The suggestions given in the program include the following: use graphics because a picture says 1,000 words; group facts in separate boxes (divide and conquer); answer the five Ws (who, what, where, when and why); use the Z formula which follows the natural progression of the reader's eyes; reverse the font and catch the reader's attention (e.g., white on black, yellow on black); and avoid serif fonts (forget the feet).
This program would be best suited for the middle level survey courses.

Advertising Layout I: Space Allocations
This program builds understanding of elements of art and principles of design as applied to the creation of magazine advertisements and posters. Examples demonstrate effective and ineffective advertising layout by addressing recommended space allocation for the illustration, headline, copy and logo and whether to use a photograph or original art for the illustration. In addition, the program covers headline issues such as overprinting, reverse type and typefaces and shows examples of the optical centre, symmetrical and asymmetrical balance and the Kodak "rule of thirds." The layout techniques of vertical half, horizontal half, corner half, white space, bleed and borders are also discussed. The program may be viewed in shorter sections as students examine and experiment with specific design or composition techniques.

Don't Risk Your Life
Don't Risk Your Life is a short educational drama that helps to educate young people about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. Young people tell their personal experiences of being injured on the job. Family members share their stories of having lost a loved one. New workers and employers know that it takes more than a job to be ready for work. This program emphasizes the three R's of the Ready for Work program: 1. The right to know about the hazards of your job. 2. The right to participate in health and safety in the workplace. 3. The right to refuse work that you believe to be unusually dangerous to yourself and others. Viewers are encouraged to practice safe work habits on the job and understand their rights as an employee to promote safety and prevent accidents in the workplace.
