Brain Gains: Better Grades Through Fitness
The National visits an inner city high school in Saskatoon, SK, where teacher Allison Cameron tests the theory that vigorous daily exercise improves academic performance. City Park Collegiate is considered a high school of last resort for kids who haven't been able to make it anywhere else. The Grade 8 and 9 students contend with a wide range of behavioural problems: almost half are diagnosed with ADHD and many work at a Grade 4 level. When Allison came across groundbreaking research by Harvard psychiatrist John Ratey (author of Spark), showing a link between sustained aerobic activity and the brain's ability to learn, she took the data to her principal to make the case for a new approach. For Allison and her students, the program was a runaway success and test results prove it.

The Fall and Rise of Theo Fleury
This is the story of Theo Fleury, who, against all odds, established himself as a major star in the National Hockey League. In his rookie year, he helped the Calgary Flames win the Stanley Cup and went on to rack up Hall of Fame stats. But, through it all, he was as troubled as he was talented and tough.
This Fifth Estate episode relates Fleury's remarkable story, the staggering fall from grace that cost him millions of dollars, his family and almost, his life. Fleury talks about how he struggled back from the brink of despair to become clean and sober and ready to help others. He candidly discusses the dark issues that haunted him during the glory years, including the sexual abuse he experienced as a teenager at the hand of the now notorious junior hockey coach, Graham James. Behind Fleury's public bravado was a man struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs and sex. His candid and unsentimental recounting of those years and, finally, his vanquishing of his demons, will be an inspiration to many - a cautionary tale for others.
This video opens a dialogue for youth to be aware of these issues and to not feel as alone.

Two Spirited
This program is about a gay man who followed his passion for women's jingle dancing and sewing costumes. This young man faced rejection from an Elder at a Kamloops pow wow, but managed to recover his self-esteem. It also tells of the history of two-spirited people in the First Nations culture. Two Spirited is the story of Rodney "Geeyo" Poucette's encounter with prejudice when he competes as a Jingle Dress dancer - a category normally reserved for women. During a powwow, an Elder discovers that Geeyo is a man and takes away his championship. Deeply humiliated, he stops dancing. Six years later, he makes a triumphant return to the powwow arena, realizing that the only way to change people's minds is to walk proudly, while being true to one's spirit.
This program also describes the history of two-spirited people in the First Nations culture.
