Brain Gains: Better Grades Through Fitness
The National visits an inner city high school in Saskatoon, SK, where teacher Allison Cameron tests the theory that vigorous daily exercise improves academic performance. City Park Collegiate is considered a high school of last resort for kids who haven't been able to make it anywhere else. The Grade 8 and 9 students contend with a wide range of behavioural problems: almost half are diagnosed with ADHD and many work at a Grade 4 level. When Allison came across groundbreaking research by Harvard psychiatrist John Ratey (author of Spark), showing a link between sustained aerobic activity and the brain's ability to learn, she took the data to her principal to make the case for a new approach. For Allison and her students, the program was a runaway success and test results prove it.

Teen Truth: An Inside Look at Body Image
What do teens see when they look in the mirror? Regardless of how closely their actual bodies match their perception, teenagers' body image can dramatically affect their self-esteem, eating and exercise habits, relationships with others and ultimately their health. Using the Teen Truth signature "video by students for students" style, the video captures real teens, parents, physicians, a coach and an entertainment professional discussing how celebrities, media, sports and peers influence one's body image and may lead to dangerous habits. Three compelling personal stories reveal how peer and media influences drove these teens to engage in life-threatening behaviours. These stories include teasing and exclusion led Emily to develop an eating disorder and Kayla to binge eat her way to obesity, while Nolan's desire to be bigger, stronger and faster ended in health hazards due to his performance enhancing drug use. A father's sobering account of how steroids claimed the life of his baseball star son drives home the seriousness of this issue. In the end, the film challenges viewers to think differently about how they see their body image and the body image of others. Ultimately it empowers teens to find true strength and self-acceptance from within.

The "Are You a Bully" Test?
Many people may be bullies and not even know it. This program challenges students to think about their own behaviour with a series of seven questions about physical, verbal, and exclusionary bullying. Questions include: Have you ever punched, shoved, or hit another boy or girl? Do you ever make fun of or tease other students or call them mean names? Do you often make fun of others because they are "different" from you or your friends? Have you purposely not invited someone to hang out with you and your friends? Do you gossip about other people or spread rumors via text messages or through social network sites? After each question students describe their own experiences as victims and perpetrators of bullying. Their stories and comments by Joel Haber, a leading bullying expert, show how bullying hurts both the person being bullied and the bullies themselves.
