Outcome
Investigate the psychology of food.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the meaning of food psychology and mindful eating.
(b)

Investigate how specific factors can influence food choices and eating habits including:

  • lifestyle;
  • religion/spirituality;
  • culture;
  • personal history;
  • region and geography;
  • social needs (e.g., peers, status);
  • physical needs;
  • emotional needs;
  • economic capacity;
  • advertising and social media;
  • where food is consumed (e.g., table, desk, couch);
  • special occasions;
  • food availability;
  • taste;
  • convenience;
  • how food was grown (e.g., fair trade, organic, animal welfare);
  • nutrition; and,
  • trends and fads.
(c) Examine the influences of various social situations (e.g., celebration, comfort, sympathy, affection) on foods consumed.
(d) Reflect on one meal eaten recently and consider the factors that went into those food choices (e.g., cost, convenience, advertising).
(e) Inquire into the ways different foods can affect personal well-being (e.g., stress, depression, energy levels).
(f) Investigate the psychology of shopping for/purchasing food (e.g., product placement in stores, setup of aisles, ambiance).
