The Pass System
Saskatoon filmmaker Alex Williams exposes a little-known piece of Canadian history - one in which First Nations people required permits issued by an Indian Agent in order to leave their reserves. Purportedly in response to the Northwest Resistance of 1885, Sir John A. Macdonald enacted a system of racial segregation that denied First Nations people in parts of Western Canada the basic freedom of mobility that other Canadians experienced. Although the pass system had no basis in law, it stayed in effect for over 60 years and prevented First Nations parents from visiting their children in residential schools, limited access to relatives, and discouraged travel to towns and cities. This film includes archival research as well as the oral histories of Elders.

When We Were Alone
A young girl asks her kókum questions about herself, such as why she wears bright colours, why she grows her hair long, why she spends time with her brother and why she speaks Cree. Her kókum explains that when she went to school far away as a child, she had to wear dark colours, her hair was cut short, she was separated from her brother and she wasn't allowed to speak her home language. Every Human Has Rights: A Photographic Declaration for Kids
Eleanor Roosevelt chaired a committee that determined rights for every citizen in every country. Since 1948, these rights declare that every human is entitled to freedom, fair government, freedom to come and go and to associate with others and the right to free expression.
In the foreword, Mary Robinson writes about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, what it means and how we struggle to achieve true freedom for all people. She reminds us that change does not occur by reading a book; rather, action is required.
The rights in the book are accompanied by photographs. Youth are encouraged to write a poem, short essay or paragraph describing what the right means to them. The book includes an index and the full Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Growth Rings is about places along BC's beautiful coastline, the people who live in them, and how these places change as a result of large industry involvement either close by, or far away up the channel. Different people in different places tell their stories, not only of their present and past experiences with large scale local production, but of their concern for the ecology surrounding them, and their attachment to the places they call home.

Hana's Suitcase
The National produced a documentary based on CBC journalist Karen Levine's book Hana's Suitcase: A True Story. The book depicts a Japanese school teacher, Fumiko Ishioka, who decides to use the Holocaust as an educational tool. Using the suitcase of Hana Brady, a young girl who was sent to Auschwitz from the Terzen camp in Czechoslovakia, Ishioka teaches children about the horror of war and encourages peace. Levine meets Ishioka and Hana's brother, George, who survived Auschwitz because he had skills the Germans wanted. Levine records their stories and the trio speak to school children around the world to try to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

Prisoners of Prejudice: Canada's First National Internment Operations 1914-1920
The Canadian Government actively recruited Ukrainians to develop the Canadian west. Yet, in 1914, the same country that had invited the Ukrainians from Austria-Hungary classified them as "enemy aliens" and interned many of the men. The Ukrainian Canadian internment was part of the detention of "enemy aliens" in Canada, lasting from 1914 to 1920, under the terms of the War Measures Act. During the internment, Ukrainian people lost employment, were treated as subversives, their wealth was confiscated, and they were used as forced labour. This resource reveals the historical injustice done to the Ukrainian people who were judged not because of anything they had done, but only because of who they were and where they came from.

Tar Sands: Canada for Sale
Tar Sands: Canada for Sale captures the intersecting storyline of a remarkable cast of characters eager to cash in on the oil boom in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Washington lobbyists, pipefitters from Newfoundland, Chinese investors and Norwegian industrialists descend on tar-soaked Fort McMurray, a modern-day Eldorado, where rents are skyrocketing and cocaine abuse is four times the provincial average. Up for grabs - a stake in the $100 billion energy bonanza and Canada's economic sovereignty. this documentary tracks the growth of the world's largest reserve of 'unconventional' oil.
This Florida-sized 'environmental sacrifice zone' has become Canada's contribution to the U.S. energy security in the post-9/11 world. Yet, for many, the tar sands are a global warming disaster. As Fort McMurray bursts at the seams, children from Thunder Bay to Cape Breton are made tar-sands orphans by their migrant-worker parents. Canada's petrodollar breaks the back of the manufacturing economy in the East. Cancer rates skyrocket downstream of Fort McMurray while Rocky Mountain glaciers melt and disappear. And all the while, Alberta crude goes south to U.S. markets while Eastern Canada pays ever more for insecure Middle East oil. In an isolated region of the north, Canada's future is being carved out of the forest at the breakneck pace. "Tar Sands: Canada for Sale" questions how much Canada is willing to sacrifice for a stake in this century's greatest energy bonanza.
